How You Can Help: Volunteering


We value the contribution our volunteers make to enhance the quality of life for those we serve. We thank all our volunteers for their donation of time and skills.

Volunteer opportunities:

Breastfeeding Clinic: to register and welcome mothers and babies to the clinic; and to assist the physicians.

Chiropractor: to provide chiropractic treatments to improve the health of seniors and low income clients

Community Health Bus: to assist nursing staff in providing access and support to homeless clients using the Alex Community Health Bus in downtown Calgary

Driving Companion: to drive clinic clients to medical and other appointments

Friendly Visitor: to provide companionship to seniors who may be at risk of isolation

Massage Therapist: to provide massage therapy treatments to improve the health of low income seniors and other low income clients

Pathways to Housing: to assist a multi-disciplinary team working to house chronically homeless clients: help clients move furniture and set up their new home; escort clients on shopping trips to purchase items for their new home; teach clients how to navigate public transit system; be a client mentor/companion; be a literacy tutor.

Spinz Food Program: to sort, bag, and distribute food hampers to low income and homeless clients on Thursday mornings.

Walking Partner: to accompany senior clients on weekly walks and introduce them to basic fitness exercises

Eligibility
Volunteers must be 16 years of age and over and have the skills and physical ability to carry out the job.

Screening
All volunteers are required to complete an application form; meet with the volunteer coordinator; complete a confidentiality agreement; and pass a police security clearance (Alex pays) and reference checks. Volunteers are evaluated three months after their start date or as needed or requested by the volunteer or the program leader. This evaluation provides opportunity to assess the volunteer’s suitability for their assigned duties and their satisfaction with their volunteer role.

Orientation
Volunteers are given a facility orientation and an introduction to the fundamental philosophy and mission of the Alex. Further orientation to the specific area of volunteer duties will be provided by the program leader.

Commitment
Volunteers are asked to make minimum two to three hours per week for minimum three months.

Confidentiality
Volunteers are asked to respect the confidentiality of all clients. Personal information shared between the client and volunteer as well as the content of the client’s file is not to be shared outside the Alex. Confidentiality of personal information of volunteers will also be respected under the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.
