In January 2008, Calgary launched its 10 Year Plan to End Homelessness. As part of this plan, the Calgary Homeless Foundation approved The Alex Community Health Centre to establish HomeBase, a project that opened in July 2009.
HomeBase accepted its first referrals in July 2009 and housed its first client in the same month. HomeBase has a team of six amazingly talented individuals with a wide range of experience who will be able to support and inspire our clients as they work to make changes in their lives.
HomeBase is a ‘Housing First’ model – that means that everyone is entitled to housing and the supports needed to maintain that housing. HomeBase provides intensive case management support for men and women who are working at ending their homelessness and establishing stable housing. The focus of the program is to ensure clients meet the goals they set for themselves. Staff met with clients at least twice each week to ensure they receive all the resources necessary to meet their goals. HomeBase applies a harm reduction program, meaning that individuals are not required to abstain from substance abuse in order to be part of HomeBase.
